Rendez-vous
of history, geography, man, nature, music and visual arts,
pre-Roman sculpture in the Musée Granet, springs
and fountains that from the beginning of time still murmur
softly to themselves...
blending
chance and design, a pastoral symphony, Cézanne, a poem merging
recombinant molecules into a moment of grace... Aix, a meeting
of the ways from the Mediterranean to the Alps, Rome to Arles
and Spain, the Camargue to summer sheep pasture in the Alps,
a major Roman spa, proud capital of Provence, center
of a great university, and home to an International Music
Festival, by-passed in the nineteeenth century by the
Paris-Marseille railroad Aix slept a hundred years.

While
its boisterous neighbour to the south, Marseille, fell
prey to economic advantages, Aix retained and reclaimed
important vestiges of its past, its mediaevaland
post-Renaissance architecture...its integrity; immense modern
residences on its south-south-western flanks are another
world, invisible from the Cours Mirabeau, the Mazarin quarter,
the
cathedral Saint Sauveur, and the tranquil splendor of the
route du Tholonet, Mount Sainte Victoire, the route de Vauvenargue
and the route des Alpes. "Le vieil Aix", like its
past, is preserved, its spirit intact
